Can I join a DBT skills group if I have an outside therapist?

Yes, you can participate in a DBT Center group to augment your therapy.

Guidepost DBT groups can be especially helpful in reinforcing skills taught during individual therapy. With the added coaching and ability to connect with others using DBT skills, you have a unique opportunity to practice skills and see how others are using them for their mental wellness. You also get the chance to roleplay some of these skills with others in the group.

Before joining a group, however, you need to be aware of what is required. To be eligible to join one of our DBT groups, you need to have an individual therapist. It’s recommended to have a DBT trained therapist. We will, however, allow you to participate in a group with a non-DBT trained therapist under some circumstances.

If you already have an individual therapist, but think you may benefit from a DBT center therapist, we can also provide individual counseling services. In many cases, these individual therapy sessions are less frequent--usually once or twice a month.

We would love to discuss how a DBT therapy group can help you develop the skills to successfully deal with life’s everyday challenges
