Maggie McLain is a holistic, trauma-informed LMFT/ Art Therapist with an extensive background providing group Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as well as individual treatment. Initially DBT trained in 2006 through Behavioral Tech Institute while employed by The California Department of State Hospitals (DSH), Maggie gained DBT experience by providing DBT treatment services for two of DSH’s comprehensive DBT units.

Maggie assisted individuals of various ages with a wide array of psychiatric diagnoses including but not limited to PTSD, Bipolar Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, Substance Related Disorders, and Personality Disorders. She has experience working at local government agencies with children, adolescents, and adults with Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Neurocognitive Disorders, and Impulse Control Disorders.

 
 

As a skilled facilitator, Maggie’s approach is non-judgmental and person-centered. She enables individuals to have a better relationship with themselves as well as their communities and has witnessed the monumental change that DBT invokes when individuals are ready to actively pursue their goals and become a better version of themselves.

 
 
 

Background & Licensure


Maggie’s past work experience with both local and state government agencies have provided training in additional areas such as Trauma Informed Care, Somatic Experiencing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and numerous Creative Arts Therapies. She is also trained in DBT Prolonged Exposure where individuals who are ready and capable of effectively addressing past traumatic events can do so within a DBT framework.

Additionally, Maggie is a registered Art Therapist/ ATR who incorporates art therapy techniques to promote the sublimation of dysregulated emotions/impulses. She also utilizes art to reinforce DBT learning principles for those who are interested. Maggie completed a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Art in 1996 at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She relocated to California to attend graduate school at Notre Dame De Namur University in Belmont, California, where she earned a Master of Science in Marital Family Therapy and Art Therapy in May of 2001.
